Side by Side UTV Comparison Chart (by Weight)
UTVs come in all shapes and sizes. Some are built for quick handling, while others focus on stability and power. So how much does a side by side actually weigh? If you’re comparing models or checking towing limits, here’s a breakdown of popular UTV weights—including Bobcat® models—to make your search easier.
How Is Side by Side Weight Measured?
Let’s start with side by side weight terms. Manufacturers use a few different measurements. Understanding what each term means will help you make a better decision for your machine.
- Dry Weight: This is the base weight of the machine without fuel, oil, or other fluids. Dry weight is the most commonly listed UTV weight, and it is usually an estimate.
- Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW): This is a combination of dry weight and the weight of fluids, cargo, and passengers. In other words, this is the weight of a fully loaded UTV, so it changes based on the load. For Bobcat UTVs, this is called the operating weight.
- Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR): The maximum weight a UTV can handle, including everything (machine, passengers, cargo, and fluids). You can’t exceed this number without overloading the machine. This is also called the vehicle rated capacity or the payload capacity.
- Cargo Box Capacity: This is the maximum weight the UTV’s cargo box can handle. This number will always be smaller than the vehicle rated capacity. This is also called the cargo bed capacity or the cargo box bed load capacity.
For a Bobcat UTV, you will see specs for the operating weight, vehicle rated capacity, and cargo box bed load capacity.

When to Choose a Bobcat UTV
Bobcat models tend to have a mid-range operating weight, a higher vehicle rated capacity, and a higher cargo box capacity. If you’re looking for easy transport, good fuel efficiency, and a better ability to carry heavy loads, a Bobcat UTV is a good option for you.
Side by Side Transportation Weight Requirements
If you’re looking at side by side weight because of towing requirements, Bobcat is also a great choice if you’re looking at side by side weight because of towing requirements. Because the operating weight on the largest Bobcat model (the UV34XL diesel) is 2,165 lbs, you can tow any Bobcat UTV behind most mid-sized and full-sized trucks. And, with a lower average side by side weight, you’ll burn less fuel while hauling the machine.
